It truly is the first step toward a REAL patent; but you have to start somewhere.
As these fellows clearly understand. The Arkados people have asked for a peg in the timeline to prove that they were first. We'll see if it works out like they want.

On the other hand, a couple of guys are claiming patent rights to pod casting ( see here: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/496/transcript ) and I'm sure they wish they had a provisional patent receipt now as that would go a long way to their claim for royalties.
Make sure you establish your claim in time with a provisional patent receipt.
